In recognition of National Family Caregivers Month, The Westerly Pewaukee is underscoring the critical need for specialized support for family caregivers as the senior population rapidly expands. The community positions its Memory Care program as a vital solution, ensuring dignity and empathy for both the older adult and their family members.

The need for innovative solutions is urgent: the number of Wisconsin residents aged 75 or older is expected to increase by 41% this decade, according to data from a Forward Analytics report. Nationally, the annual rate of new dementia cases is projected to double from approximately 514,000 in 2020 to 1 million by 2060.

Modern Memory Care as the Caregiver Solution

The Westerly's model is a cutting-edge approach that directly tackles caregiver burnout by offering a specialized environment. Choosing specialized senior care is a crucial step that can restore freedom and emotional connection for family caregivers. This allows family members to focus on enjoying their loved ones rather than being solely defined by their caregiving duties.

"We believe memory care should be a continuation of life, fostering purpose and connection for both the resident and their family," states Meghan Davis, Director of Lifestyle for Koru Health. "Our approach moves past outdated models to deliver true empathy and dignity, offering a supportive environment that adapts to the individual."

This shift in focus is deeply supported by clinical staff. In an interview with The Morning Blend recently, RN Clinical Director for Memory Care, Barbara Hefner, observes: “By bringing someone to the Westerly and allowing them the opportunity to live in memory care where they can have those needs met, the family can get some of their family time back.”

Dignity, Purpose, and Expert Support

The Westerly's Memory Care program focuses on residents’ individual life stories and abilities, creating both structured and spontaneous opportunities for purposeful interaction, ensuring residents remain active for as long as they are able.

Central to this modern approach is highly specialized staff training. Koru Health staff receive important experiential training focused on enhancing their understanding of the resident’s reality, adaptations for abilities, and increased empathy building. The community’s design also emphasizes family comfort, ensuring everyone feels welcome to spend quality time with their loved ones.

The intimate community features 18 specialty care suites and offers diverse areas for enjoyment, including Life Skills Stations, a Sensory Room, and dedicated outdoor space.
